more green

The Ciutat Verda Congress: perfect organization by Jordina Papasseit and the team supporting her, many professionals attended to the conference.

The philosophy "MORE GREEN" tries to find alternatives to the building, speculative and destructive system threatening the environment and the citizen. The green city, la ciudad verde, die grüne Stadt.

On Saturday 16th April, the Second International Congress of Sustainable Architecture took place at Construmat in Barcelona and there were several conferences about the theme. We are stepping in the Renaissance "Honoris Natura".

Zurich has obliged a new building to have a garden-roof, now the gardens missing below are to be found above. Non-polluting materials and energies, public transport or bike instead of own car, plants on every corner of the roof, urban plans more connected to the environment, use of plants needing few water and maintenance...

We have to be optimistic and think that those supporting sustainability and green spaces, do it because they really believe in it.

The people responsible for the "green city" (to a large extent, ourselves) have to get involved and stop being mere park agents, green producers or congress organizers.

Winter species selection

This hard winter has taught us again that not all plants from Mediterranean areas can be introduced in our climatology. Australian varieties have suffered important damages. In our nursery, amongst the Callistemon varieties, only the C. rigidus, laevis, linearis and lanceolatus have survived. All purple hopbushes have died, even the ones cultivated for three years. In general we had many losses within the Phormium, Myoporum parviflorum (Madrid), Metrosideros, Brachychitron, Grevilleas, Lagunaria...

We always risk it and think that species will adapt over the years, but it is not so. Each variety has a limit and it is no possible to go beyond it, it does not matter whether it comes from our coasts or from the Pacific.

Crocus, Muscaris, Daffodils, Freesias... these flowers are a good spring start in a grass garden.

When the blooming period of the bulbous plants comes to an end, the grasses start developing and blooming, and when their lethargy starts, the bulbous plants emerge again.

It is a very recommended combination and it is very economical, it is only necessary to replant bulbous plants every 3-5 years.

Visit to the Bioriza Nursery

On 26th May, the Bioriza Nursery is organizing, together with APEVC, a visit to its facilities. Both Miguel and Joan have an extraordinary knowledge of plants, and not only of the local ones, which are their specialization.

Their recently inaugurated gardens are a work by the master Jordi Fabregas.

Bioriza is one of the reference points in the future landscape architecture.
